PIRATES FIRST TO WIN THE BSN TROPHY

21/07/23

Poole Wessex Marine Pirates fulfilled their goal in securing the BSN Series Trophy, despite suffering a 42-48 defeat in Glasgow on Friday night.

Holding a thirty-four point lead from their demolition job on the Tigers in the first leg, the Pirates  kept pace with the home side throughout the meeting with skipper Steve Worrall leading the way with a paid twelve score from his five rides.

Speaking after the success, Worrall quipped "I think they might have to put an extension on the side of the stadium down at Poole to fit all the trophies in, but tonight it was a good start for us. You know, in the back of our mind the important one is the league. It is the league that everyone wants to win and we stand in good stead for that but here tonight though, obviously it was fantastic. The BSN Trophy is a new trophy and it is nice to have our name on it. I've been with Poole the last two seasons and know what it is like to win trophies but they have been under Danny King's captaincy and I have got the honour now of taking that role and you know, it is nice. You get to go and lift the trophy along with the lads and everyone appreciates the hard work. So it was good tonight. One down and two to go now.
"I felt that the track here rides a bit different this year as to last season. The dip has now gone coming into turn three and it feels like it has just sped the track up so much. The set-ups I had in mind, and you know you write them all down and refer to them, and I think I was a little bit too slow to start with, but once I got going and figured it all out, towards the end of the night I felt I had more than enough speed and went out and did the business in heat fifteen which was pretty good to end my night on."

One rider who didn't have quite such a good end to their meeting, was Anders Rowe who suffered a painful injury in heat eleven when sat pretty in a heat-sharing third place, only to suffer a whiplash on the rear by a snapped primary chain. "It was a tough night really", admitted Rowe, "I had that crash when my primary snapped going into the fastest point of the track as well. It is what is really. It was just one of those things, you can't help it really but that was my last ride and a bit of a painful way to finish on.  I've got a bit of sore backside but I will be all good and the bikes are good so we just move on to the next one and see what we can do next. It is nice to win a trophy, of course it is. I think I put a bit too much pressure on myself today. I moved at the starts and just wasn't making starts until that last ride . When I put too much pressure on myself it doesn't really work. I need it to be fun, but I so wanted to help the team win and demolish them but I just ended up putting too much on myself and I know that doesn't really work and my Dad saw it straight away. So I will now go back to the drawing board, have fun and take the lessons I have learnt on board for when we are back here in nine days' time.

The night's scores were level after nine heats assuring Poole of the title, but then Glasgow fired in a 4-2 and were then gifted another after Rowe's unfortunate fall. Ben Cook and Kyle Newman countered one of those heat defeats with a 4-2 in the twelfth, with Cook's victory over Ben Basso being validated by the transponder which had him crossing the line one-thousandth of a second ahead of the Dane.  Richard Lawson and Worrall kept Poole on course for a potential second leg victory as they detained a battling Chris Harris at the back, but when Claus Vissing and Lee Complin combined for a 5-1 over Zach Cook and Adam Roynon in heat fourteen, a consolation on-the-night victory was assured for the Tigers.
