Richard Lawson rode himself into the top 20 list of all-time Poole scorers with another infallible performance to lay the foundations for the Pirates to gain a foothold in the defence of the Knockout cup.
But even the 'Rocketman' was quick to acknowledge the brilliance of Anders Rowe's ride in heat seven that must surely go down as one of the best at Wimborne Road this season.
Reflecting on his ride that took him from third to first in successive laps by pushing the limits on the fourth turn, a modest Rowe admitted "I made a rubbish start and needed to do something and yeah, I keep getting close to that fence every week and eventually I think I am going to go over it at some point so I'm er, just testing the waters to see which one is the flimsiest! But yeah, it wasn't the best night for me but a good one for the team and that's the main thing. I just couldn't get anything really set up, just couldn't make the starts. I'm trying you know and obviously thanks to these boys we've got a good lead going to Redcar and hopefully we can step it up and finish it."
To add the icing on the cake in that heat seven change around of fortunes with Poole staring a 5-1 reverse in the face at the hands of Jason Edwards and Jake Allen, there was further excitement for the Poole faithful, that had turned out in good number for this first leg, as Paul Starke replicated Rowe's move to pass Allen and provide Poole with a 4-2 advantage and an eight point lead.
Both Lawson and skipper Zach Cook had exceptionally good nights, Lawson with his 7th maximum of the season and Cook dropping just a single point to a very pacy Charles Wright in heat five, leaving the Pirates with a fourteen point to defend on Friday.
