PREVIEW: CHEETAHS BACK IN TOWN - HIGH DRAMA ASS...
High excitement, total effort and moments of controversy are all but guaranteed on Wednesday night when knockout speedway comes to Wimborne Road.
A packed Poole Stadium witnessed the Wessex Marine Pirates storm to their second victory of the campaign over Oxford in the BSN Series, with a 57-33 victory.
The Pirates performance can only be described as a solid all-round competitive effort, with all seven chalking up at least one win or paid win, something that team manager Neil Middleditch acknowledged as well as heaping praise on reserves Kyle Newman (8+1) and Adam Roynon (7+2). "That was solid, but I have always said that reserves win meetings and with the two we have this season then I don't believe there are any better in this league."
For Roynon it was the perfect response to his paid two from Wednesday night and before talking up his own performance he paid credit to the Poole supporters and the atmosphere at Wimborne Road. "It feels really good to be here. What an awesome club this is, the fans really get behind the team and that helps us so much, you know. It's just a great club already. I'm like, only two meetings in and I just want to say what an awesome feeling it is to be in a club like this. I've not been here an awful lot as a rider. I have been here most mechanicing with Danny over time but I've just watched a lot of YouTube videos of this track, mainly Darcy Ward to be fair. I just watch him over and over and I am just trying to emulate what he has done on certain lines and positions. It worked in one case tonight, although I cut the guy off, but don't really care about that, but if I can get a few more laps under my belt and be as quick as the rest of our boys I'll be happy."
Roynon and Newman featured in a heat two 5-1 advantage that set the Pirates on their way, after Sam Masters won the opener, the first of four straight wins the Aussie recorded, but only to lose out on a personal maximum when Richard Lawson, named as the Rider of the Night, produced a superb outside pass in heat thirteen before going on to record the fastest time of the night. Lawson and fellow heat-leader Ben Cook then both had the beating of Masters again in heat fifteen to see Poole close out an already won meeting with a final three-heat return of 14-4.
Poole promoter Dan Ford, who was delighted with the turnout on the night has offered an apology to any patron who had difficulties in parking at the stadium. "I understand a number of supporters had problems getting parked tonight and to anyone affected by that I would like to offer an apology on behalf of the club. Unfortunately the speedway does not control the parking and that there is a new system being introduced this year. That, and the huge turnout we had exacerbated the problems, but this is something we are going to work on to try and improve for future meetings."
