Poole v Coventry - Relive the 2003 Play Off Final 2nd Leg

9/04/20

Imagine a team of Leigh Adams, Bjarne Pedersen, Antonio Lindback and Tony Rickardsson with Mark Loram thrown in as a guest. Fans of 2003 had no need to imagine, for the Poole play-off team boasted those very same five rides, with Dave Watt and Ales Dryml thrown in for completion.

Coventry were the opponents and had finished second in the regular league table, some eight points shy of the Pirates' 52 points. Poole had disposed of Oxford in the play-off semi-finals and Coventry had convincingly eliminated Peterborough. The first leg was held at Coventry on September 29th (Todd Wiltshire deputising for the injured Lukas Dryml) and the Pirates had secured a one-point victory (45-44). Could they finish the job off on October 6th and deliver  Matt Ford with his first league championship success?

On Wednesday 15th April 2020 you can re-live (or if under 16 catch-up with) the action from that play-off final second leg via the club's Facebook account and on Youtube. The action will be streamed from 7.30pm.

Remembering that team, Poole boss Matt Ford described it "as one of the finest teams assembled. It was a joy to watch them week in and week out and whilst it was disappointing to have Lukas injured we were able to book Loram who was riding for Eastbourne that year. To have him alongside Tony, Leigh, Bjarne and Antonio gave us a top five to dream for. I don't think it will be too much of a spoiler, but 2003 was extremely special and really provided the platform for the great success we have enjoyed here at Poole."
