Poole newboys Danny King and Steve Worrall gave the club the perfect tonic to launch the 2020 British Speedway Season as they finished first and second respectively in the curtain-raiser Ben Fund Bonanza meeting at Scunthorpe on Saturday.
King, who will captain the Pirates in their first season back in the second tier of British racing won the Grand Final from Worrall, second as Josh Auty finished third and Lewis Kerr pulled up in the final.
With three wins and two second places to his name in the programmed heats, King only suffered defeats by Auty (heat 2) and Aaron Summers (heat 10), to finish as the highest scorer and one of the three automatic finalists. Joined by Worrall and Kerr, both having scored 12 points a-piece it was a fourth win of the day for King that had him crowned the Bonanza winner.
Speaking of the success for his new signings, Poole owner Matt Ford admitted "that was a good start for the club, we had a good retreat with them last weekend and I detected from that an air of positivity about the team and Danny and Steve were both keen to get off to a good start to the season. I am pleased for everyone involved in getting the meeting on, we all know only too well what a fabulous job the BEN FUND does for the riders and with so much crisis on-going in the world currently it was undoubtedly a relief that the meeting went ahead, and is great news that we had a Pirate first and second."
British speedway officials have confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation and following government advice and will be having further discussions on Tuesday to see if Covid-19 will have any detrimental affect on the season ahead.
