It Happened This Week....2000

16/06/19

Poole Speedway hosted the 2000 Overseas Final on 18th June, a stepping stone towards the 2001 GP series.

Former Poole rider Sam Ermolenko turned up the heat to record a perfect five ride maximum whilst the determination of the remaining rostrum spots went down to a three-man run-off, as Jason Lyons, Steve Johnston and Gary Havelock, a Pirate at the time, had all scored 13 points in their five programmed heats.

Eight riders qualified for the Intercontinental Final, British riders Martin Dugard, David Howe and Paul Hurry, along with American Josh Larsen claiming those other qualifying positions.

Ermolenko failed to score in that next round but Lyons, Johnston and Havelock all progressed to the GP Challenge but none were successful in joining the 2001 GP event.

Incidentally, a year later in the same week Jason Lyons went one better, winning the 2001 Overseas Final, also hosted by Poole. It was the second time that the Milduran had won this stage of the world championship, his first title coming in 1998 (14th June) and once again Wimborne Road was the venue at which he triumphed.
