SOMERSET 48 PIRATES 42

20/06/18

Wonder-Kid Woryna steered the Volvo Cars Poole Pirates to a valuable league point with a brilliant solo performance at the Oak Tree Arena, Somerset which included a superb win over reigning World Champion Jason Doyle in his own backyard.

Woryna took a full quota of rides, which included a heat 15 appearance along with Linus Sundstrom as this pair provided the greatest resilience to the new-look Rebels. The Pirate reserve racked up 17 points on a night when the Pirates' former Rebels managed only 6 points between them, Brady Kurtz and Josh Grajczonek both having similar 3 point returns with neither unable to claim a race win.

In all honesty the Pirates only gained the consolation league point for their six-point away defeat due to two major slices of misfortune for Somerset's Jake Allen. On two separate occasions Australian Allen was sitting in a 5-1 scoring position when bad luck struck him. First in heat 7 when he and Holder had the beating of Woryna and Worrall, a puncture on the last lap allowed the Pirates through for a share of the points, and then again in heat 11 when the same Rebels' pairing were comfortably clear of Kurtz and Sundstrom, Allen hit a hole on the fourth bend and was instantly grounded.

In a meeting where no more than four points ever separated the two sides until the final race of the night when the solid pairing of Jack Holder and Jason Doyle paired up for their second 5-1 of the night, denying the Pirates any chance of salvaging a draw.

Woryna's excellent performance saw him win four of his rides very confidently, not least when, taking a rider replacement outing,  he got clear of Doyle in heat 10 to inflict the only defeat of the night on the world champion. Woryna was also the only Pirate to beat Holder on the night, that win coming in heat 4.
