RESULT: PIRATES V LIONS

25/07/18

Having seen an early advantage extinguished to go two down against bottom-of-the-league Leicester Lions the Volvo Cars Poole Pirates waited for the sun to set before they began to shine.

An incredible sequence of seven straight maximum heat advantages from the home side emphatically expressed to the tenacious Lions that they would be leaving Wimborne Road pointless.

And whilst the final score of 58-32 may well give a one-sided look about this meeting it was far from that as Scott Nicholls rolled back the years to give an excellent performance and probably deserved more than his 7 point haul whilst another former Pirate, Hans Andersen was always in the very thick of the action and made the Pirates work hard for their harvest.

But the night belonged to home-debutant Chris Harris who gave the sort of performance that made him, in the past a fondly respected rival. Having ridden at King's Lynn earlier in the week, this was his first opportunity to show his new home fans what they could expect from him and after running a stone last in heat 4 he made the necessary changes to his set-up and went unbeaten thereafter. Trademark from the back moves gave the Poole faithful plenty to cheer about and his heat 11 last lap exploits were something to behold as he reeled in Andersen and created the opportunity for hitherto unbeaten Frederik Jakobsen to keep his copybook unspoiled, as the fifth successive maximum heat advantage was celebrated keenly by the summer evening crowd.

Jakobsen was denied the right to go through the card without a defeat when he trailed at the back in heat 14, eventually being awarded a point when his partner Richie Worrall crashed out on the third bend trying to overhaul Ricky Wells.

But Harris and Kurtz made superb passes on heat 15 leader Scott Nicholls to give Poole their ninth maximum of the night and three valuable league points.
