RESULT: POOLE V KING'S LYNN

13/06/18

The 'Volvo Cars' Poole Pirates hoisted themselves off the bottom of the SGB Premiership league table with a star-studded performance, overturning King's Lynn by 58-32 points.

With seven different Pirates winning races and only four no-scores across the 15 heats the home side were always in control of this fixture despite the presence of newly-crowned British Champion Robert Lambert for the opposition.

In contrast to the Pirates the Stars only had Lambert winning races - the 20 year old reeling off four emphatic victories before a sensational heat 13 ride from Richie Worrall ended his unbeaten run.

Worrall's efforts were even more appreciated by the Poole faithful as he was the sole Pirate in the re-run of the 'big heat' as Kurtz had earlier tangled with the air-fence on the second lap, earning a disqualification.

The manner in which Worrall threaded his way by Lambert and then laid assault on GP rider Niels-Kristian Iversen was impressive and had the grandstand on their feet as he crossed the line.

Promoter Matt Ford acknowledged it, saying "Ford said: ""Seeing the crowd go wild after Richie Worrall's sensational ride just filled me with joy and that is what this sport can do to you. It was an amazing night. I'll admit some of my initial feelings after heat 15 were of relief as everyone knows it has been a really rough start for us in 2018. But I truly always knew this team would come good and I think the performance last night proved me right. To a man, we were incredible and I'm confident the only way is up for us now."

Poole were in control from the very outset, picking up back to back maximums in the first two heats before a tenacious ride from Thomas Jorgensen was sufficient to split skipper Josh Grajczonek from the returning Nicolai Klindt who marked his 2018 Pirate debut with a win.

Heat 4 had the makings of a good battle as Woryna and Worrall were in chase of Lambert but the Poole Pole ran out of track room and took a fall on the opening lap which left Worrall having to try and cope with Lambert and former Pirate Paul Starke, who as a late Stars' call-up for Dane Michael Palm-Toft.

After a brace of shared heats the Stars began to peg back some of the deficit, Lambert coming is as a tactical substitute in heat 7 and with Jorgensen gained the visitors a 5-1 to close the margin to just four points. But Woryna and Sundstrom emphatically restored the eight point lead.
Lambert's fourth triumph shared the spoils in heat 9 before Poole piled on the points with a hat-trick of 5-1 advantages and went into heat 13 with a 20 point lead.

When Kurtz was disqualified it looked a certainty that the advantage would be trimmed but Worrall sensationally proved otherwise.
Poole extended the margin with a 4-2 in heat 14, Starke splitting Klindt from winner Szczepaniak and with Sundstrom and Worrall nominated for the final heat, they showed no mercy, Worrall again charging through the traffic to send the Stars packing.
