WRONG CALL PROVES RIGHT FOR WRIGHT - COOK DENIED TITLE

27/08/23

After finishing the heats as the highest scorer, Poole's Ben Cook found himself up against three former British Champions, including two Redcar regulars - Danny King and Charles Wright - and Chris Harris but cruelly had to settle for third place in the restarted Grand Final.

Ben had made a perfect start at the first time of asking but Wright was out of control rearing into the first turn and brought King down. Referee Willie Dishington benevolently ordered a four man re-start, despite Wright being the obvious cause of the stoppage, and the Redcar skipper took full advantage of the reprieve with both Ben and Harris battling hard to try and reel him in

Poole's other representative, Richard Lawson pulled off a crucial win in his last programmed ride to claim the last repecharge place, for riders finishing third to sixth, but then suffered a painful crash when he, Wright and Lewis Kerr all collided. After some moments of concern Lawson was able to limp back to the pits and take his part in the re-run, but he couldn’t manage to deny either Redcar rider, Wright or King from joining those top two qualifiers of Cook and Harris in that controversial final.
